What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known simply as “lipo,” involves the suction of unwanted fat deposits using thin cannulas inserted through small incisions.

This procedure can be particularly beneficial for those who are unable to achieve their desired results through diet and exercise.

During the procedure, the extracted fat can also be transferred to areas that need more volume, such as the buttocks (gluteoplasty).

Liposuction can be performed on various parts of the body, such as the abdomen, double chin, thighs, arms, and other areas.

Liposuction

How is it performed?

Liposuction can be performed on different areas of the body, depending on each patient’s needs and aesthetic goals.

Abdominal Liposuction

Abdominal liposuction, or belly liposuction, is one of the most common types of liposuction.

Aimed at reshaping body contours and enhancing the silhouette, abdominal liposuction resembles the work of a sculptor – hence the widely known term “liposculpture.”

This procedure is often combined with a abdominoplasty surgery, in which case it is referred to as lipoabdominoplasty.

Double Chin Liposuction

Double chin liposuction is a specific technique used to remove fat that accumulates in the chin and neck area. It is an effective solution for the “double chin,” which often causes discomfort and affects self-esteem.

In addition to surgery, there are also non-surgical treatments for double chin reduction, such as CoolSculpting, Morpheus 8, or radiofrequency. Learn more in our double chin treatment section.

Thigh Liposuction

Thigh liposuction is another variation of the procedure designed to reduce excess fat in the thighs and improve overall body proportion. It is a popular choice for those seeking slimmer legs with smoother contours.

This procedure is also recommended for cases where excess fat on the inner thighs causes discomfort while walking, as well as for individuals with pronounced saddlebags who wish to reduce the circumference of this area.

Who is this surgery for?

Liposuction is intended for individuals who wish to remove localized fat deposits in specific areas of the body – such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back, or double chin – that are resistant to diet and exercise.

However, it is not a treatment for overall weight loss.

Expected Results

Liposuction is a procedure that can bring a significant improvement to the shape and appearance of the body. It allows for the reduction of excess fat, resulting in a more defined and slimmer body contour.

However, results may vary from person to person and depend on several factors, such as the amount of fat removed and the quality of the skin.

Liposuction Post-Surgery and Recovery

As with any surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling and bruising after liposuction.

It is essential to follow the recovery plan prescribed by the plastic surgeon to ensure satisfactory results and minimize complications.

Post-operative care after liposuction includes wound management, the use of compression garments, and a period of rest to allow the body to heal properly.

During the recovery phase, lymphatic drainage massages are also highly recommended.

Post-operative lymphatic drainage is often advised after surgical procedures, including liposuction, to help reduce swelling, prevent fibrosis, and improve blood circulation.

These massages can also help relieve pain and post-surgical discomfort by promoting muscle relaxation and reducing tension in the treated area.

The average initial recovery period is 1 to 2 weeks, during which patients can usually resume light daily activities and notice a significant improvement in swelling and discomfort.

Full recovery typically occurs around six months after surgery, which is when the final results can be fully appreciated.

What is the scar like after Liposuction?

Liposuction generally results in minimal, millimetric scars, as the incisions are typically very small and strategically placed to minimize visibility, serving only as entry points for the cannulas.

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction involves certain risks. It is important for patients to be aware of these before deciding to proceed.
Some of the potential risks include:

  • Infection at the incision site;
  • Hematoma;
  • Poor incision healing;
  • Changes in skin sensitivity in the treated area;
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia;
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot formation in deep veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot traveling to the lungs).

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a method for removing localized fat deposits. The amount of fat that can be safely removed varies by patient. On average, between 1 and 3 kilograms of fat may be removed. The main goal is to enhance body contour and silhouette, not to achieve significant weight loss.

Abdominal liposuction is performed through small incisions where thin cannulas are inserted to suction out localized fat. This procedure can also be combined with Abdominoplasty to further refine the abdominal contour, resulting in a firmer and more defined appearance.
