Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance and proportion of the chin in relation to other facial features, thus restoring facial harmony.
The surgery can be performed to correct a chin that is too retracted (retrognathism) or, on the contrary, a chin that is too developed and projected forward (prognathism).
Chin correction surgery is performed through incisions in the vestibule of the mouth (in the gums below the teeth), so that there are no visible scars.
Retrognathism
Retrognathism is a facial condition in which the chin is retracted or positioned further back than normal in relation to the rest of the face. This condition may occur due to insufficient development of the mandibular bone or lower jaw. As a result, the facial profile may appear disproportionate, with a less prominent chin.
Prognathism
Prognathism is a facial condition in which the chin is projected forward beyond normal, resulting in an unbalanced facial profile.
Treatment for prognathism varies depending on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, the use of orthodontic appliances may be sufficient. In more serious cases, surgery may be necessary to reposition the jaw.
