Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases Affecting Blood Vessels
Index

What is the specialty of Vascular Surgery and Angiology?

Vascular Surgery and Angiology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention, and medical and surgical treatment of diseases affecting blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels.

In addition to vascular surgery itself, the specialty includes various therapeutic approaches, such as minimally invasive treatments (sclerotherapy) and vascular laser therapy.

At Living Clinic, we focus especially on the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins, helping to improve blood circulation, the appearance of the legs, and associated symptoms.

Common Vascular Diseases

Vascular diseases affect blood circulation and can impair the function of veins and arteries. Some of the most common include:

  • Varicose Veins – Dilated and irregular veins that can cause pain, swelling, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs;
  • Spider Veins – Small dilated blood vessels that appear on the skin, usually due to genetic or hormonal factors;
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency – Difficulty in returning venous blood to the heart, which can cause tired legs, tingling, swelling, and skin changes;
  • Other Vascular Diseases – Some more serious conditions include deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral arterial disease (PAD), aneurysms, lymphedema, and lipedema, all of which require specialized medical care.

Common Symptoms of Vascular Problems

Early identification of symptoms can prevent serious complications. Some of the most common signs of vascular problems include:

  • Dilated and visible veins in the legs (varicose veins);

  • Small red or bluish vessels on the skin (spider veins);

  • Pain or a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs;

  • Sensation of warmth or burning in the legs;

  • Swelling and edema, especially at the end of the day;

  • Skin discoloration (bluish or reddish tones);

  • Wounds or ulcers that do not heal;

  • Tingling or numbness in the extremities;

  • Frequent nighttime cramps;

  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to seek an evaluation by a vascular surgeon.

Vascular Treatments at Living Clinic

At Living Clinic, we offer various approaches for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins, using innovative and minimally invasive methods that deliver excellent results and quick recovery.

Vascular Laser

Vascular laser treatment (Fotona) is a modern and non-invasive technology, ideal for treating spider veins and small varicose veins. By emitting light energy, the laser targets the affected vessels directly, progressively and safely eliminating them.

This treatment is recommended for varicose veins, dilated facial veins (telangiectasias), and other superficial vascular conditions.

Results are visible quickly, the risk of complications is low, and recovery time is very short.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy, also known as “vein drying,” is one of the most effective methods for treating spider veins and small to medium-sized varicose veins. It involves injecting a sclerosing agent directly into the blood vessel, causing it to gradually disappear. There are different techniques:

  • Liquid Sclerotherapy – Recommended for small spider veins

  • Foam Sclerotherapy – More effective for slightly larger varicose veins

At Living Clinic, the technique used depends on the personalized assessment carried out by the physician.

Vascular Surgery for Varicose Veins

For more advanced cases of varicose veins, a surgical approach may be necessary.

At Living Clinic, different surgical techniques are used to eliminate varicose veins, depending on their size and location.

Some of the most commonly used techniques include: Phlebectomy (varicose vein microsurgery), Laser Varicose Vein Surgery, Endovenous Radiofrequency, and Conventional Vascular Surgery.

Phlebectomy (Varicose Vein Microsurgery)

Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure recommended for medium to large superficial varicose veins.

In this microsurgery, small incisions are made in the skin to remove the varicose veins using a “surgical hook.”

Healing is quick, with minimal discomfort and excellent aesthetic results.

Laser Varicose Vein Surgery

Laser surgery for varicose veins (endovenous laser or endolaser) is an innovative and minimally invasive procedure that requires no large incisions—only a small puncture in the skin. The treatment involves inserting a specialized probe into the affected vein.

Through the emission of thermal energy, the vein is heated, causing it to close and eventually be naturally absorbed by the body.

Endovenous Radiofrequency

Endovenous radiofrequency is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat larger varicose veins. Similar to laser surgery, it involves inserting a thin catheter into the affected vein.

The catheter emits controlled radiofrequency energy, heating the vein walls and causing the vein to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the closed vein is reabsorbed by the body.

This procedure is performed under local anesthesia, requires only a small skin incision, and allows for a quick recovery with minimal pain and excellent clinical and aesthetic outcomes.

Conventional Vascular Surgery

Conventional vascular surgery is a more invasive procedure than the previously mentioned techniques, used to treat larger varicose veins and severe venous insufficiency.

In this method, the affected vein is removed through small incisions made along the leg. The goal is to redirect blood flow to healthy veins, improving circulation and eliminating symptoms associated with varicose veins.

Recovery time may be longer compared to minimally invasive techniques, but discomfort is well managed with medication.

Vascular Health Prevention and Care

To maintain good vascular health, it’s important to adopt healthy habits, such as:

  • Engaging in regular physical activity

  • Avoiding long periods of sitting or standing

  • Maintaining a balanced diet, rich in fiber and low in fat

  • Managing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension

  • Wearing compression stockings, if recommended by your doctor

What is the price of vascular treatments?

The cost of vascular treatments varies depending on the location and extent of the condition, as well as the technique used (vascular laser, sclerotherapy, surgery, etc.).

Vascular Laser treatments typically cost around €300 on average. Sclerotherapy treatments are approximately €120.
