Sclerotherapy
Practical Information
Minimally Invasive (controlled injection of the sclerosing agent)
Treatment of spider veins and small to medium-sized varicose veins
20 to 40 minutes per session, depending on the case.
2 to 3 sessions (may vary depending on the case)
Generally visible after the first few weeks, with progressive improvement over 4 to 6 weeks.
Very long-lasting / permanent results. However, new veins may appear, requiring maintenance sessions.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. It involves the injection of a sclerosing agent directly into the affected veins, causing them to collapse, shrink, and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. This leads to improved appearance and reduced symptoms, such as pain or swelling. It is a minimally invasive treatment, typically performed by a specialist in Angiology or Vascular Surgery.
What is it for?
Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective and safest methods for eliminating spider veins in the legs, also known as telangiectasias, as well as small varicose veins.
In general, it is indicated for the treatment of:
- Telangiectasias (thin red or bluish vessels visible on the skin);
- Reticular veins (bluish, slightly raised superficial veins);
- Microvaricose veins;
- Vascular spider veins (visible and unaesthetic vascular networks);
- Residual varicose veins after surgery or laser treatment.
How does it work?
Sclerotherapy involves the controlled injection of a sclerosing agent into the targeted vein. This substance causes a controlled inflammation of the vein wall, leading to its collapse and closure. Over time, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and is no longer visible on the skin’s surface.
There are two main types of sclerotherapy:
- Liquid sclerotherapy: Ideal for telangiectasias and very fine veins;
- Foam sclerotherapy: Suitable for larger veins, as it allows greater contact of the substance with the vein wall.
This is an outpatient, safe and virtually painless procedure, performed without anesthesia and with a quick recovery.
Application Areas
Sclerotherapy can be performed in various areas:
- Legs: The most common region, including thighs, knees, calves, and ankles;
- Face: In specific cases of facial telangiectasias;
- Trunk and back: In cases of small visible vascular networks;
- Other localized areas with the presence of dilated vessels.
Recovery and Aftercare
Although it is a minimally invasive procedure, some aftercare measures are essential:
Wear compression stockings in the days following the session, as advised by your doctor (crucial for promoting the closure of treated vessels);
Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated areas for at least 15 days;
Avoid intense physical activity during the first 24 to 48 hours;
Do not take hot baths, use saunas, or jacuzzis on the day of the treatment;
Do not massage or rub the treated areas during the first 48 hours;
Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the use of creams or topical medications, if necessary;
Stay active with light walking to encourage healthy blood circulation.

What results can you expect?
The results of sclerotherapy are generally visible within the first few weeks, with progressive improvement over 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients notice a significant difference after 2 to 3 sessions, although more extensive cases may require additional treatments.
Treated veins do not reappear, but new veins may develop over time. Maintenance sessions can be performed if needed.
Is Sclerotherapy painful?
Sclerotherapy is generally well-tolerated and causes minimal discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a slight burning, tingling, or stinging at the injection site, which lasts only a few seconds.
The procedure does not require anesthesia, and any discomfort is usually mild and short-lived. After the session, it’s common to feel a slight sensitivity or notice small bruises, but these typically resolve quickly.
How long does the effect of the treatment last?
Treated vessels do not reappear, but the development of new vessels may occur over time. Annual maintenance sessions are recommended in some cases.
Do I need rest after the treatment?
It is not necessary. Most patients return to their normal routine on the same day.
What happens to the veins after the injection?
The body naturally reabsorbs the collapsed veins, making them invisible on the surface of the skin.
Can I undergo sclerotherapy in the summer?
Yes, as long as you avoid direct sun exposure on the treated areas and use appropriate protection. However, many patients prefer to undergo the treatment during the cooler months.
I had sclerotherapy and the appearance got worse. Is that normal?
Right after the treatment, it’s possible to notice redness, darkening, or swelling in the treated area, which may give the impression of worsening. These signs are temporary and usually fade in the following weeks. In rare cases, more prolonged reactions may occur and should be evaluated by the doctor.
Is it normal to have bruising after sclerotherapy?
Yes. Small bruises are common and are part of the body’s natural response. They usually disappear within a few days to a couple of weeks. Wearing compression stockings can help reduce them.
What are the possible complications of sclerotherapy?
Complications are rare but may include temporary hyperpigmentation, small areas of hardening under the skin, inflammation, or—very rarely—allergic reactions. With the correct technique and recommended care, these risks are minimized.
Most of these effects are temporary, especially when all post-treatment care instructions are followed.
What is the price of Sclerotherapy?
The average price of vascular treatments with Sclerotherapy is €120. However, you should schedule a consultation to receive a personalized quote.
