If you feel you have a double chin and it bothers you, and you are looking for a quick and efficient solution to correct it, then consider that a double chin liposuction (commonly called double chin lipo) could be the solution for you.

This surgical technique is capable of removing excess unwanted fat from the neck region, providing a more defined facial contour and a more elegant appearance.

There are also other less invasive double chin treatments, which we will mention later in this article.

How does chin liposuction work?

In a double chin liposuction, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions in the neck area and inserts a thin cannula to suction excess fat. This process reshapes the zone, eliminating the double chin and creating a more balanced and harmonious contour on the neck.

This technique is the most effective when there is a large accumulation of superficial fat.

Who is eligible for a chin liposuction?

A double chin liposuction is recommended for people who have significant accumulation of fat located in the neck region, superficial to the platysma muscle, and who wish to improve their facial contour. However, it is important to undergo an evaluation with our plastic surgeon to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

How long does the chin liposuction surgery last?

The duration of a double chin liposuction varies according to each specific case, but generally the surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete. This time may vary depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the technique used by the surgeon.

Is the liposuction performed under anaesthesia?

Yes. Fat liposuction can be performed with general anaesthesia or with local anaesthesia supplemented with sedation.

Side effects from chin liposuction

Just like any surgical procedure, double chin liposuction has some temporary side effects, such as swelling, bruising, sensitivity and discomfort in the treated area. However, these effects generally diminish over time and are easily controlled with medications prescribed by your doctor.

What are the risks with a chin liposuction?

Although jowl liposuction is considered a safe procedure, there are some reduced risks associated with it, such as irregularities or insufficient skin retraction.

What is the scar like from a chin liposuction?

A double chin liposuction, like any surgery, leaves scars. However, the scars from this type of surgery are quite small as they consist of the access points for the suction cannulas and are generally half a centimetre long. 2 to 4 access points may be necessary. Furthermore, scars become less noticeable over time. Living Clinic’s Plastic Surgeon will advise you on the best way to treat your scars.

Chin liposuction post op

A double chin liposuction is generally carried out on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient is discharged on the same day.

During the post-operative period, it is essential to follow all of the plastic surgeon’s instructions. Some of the recommendations will include:

  • Application of ice;
  • Use of a “compressive band”;
  • Lymphatic drainage massage after surgery.

Recovery from a chin liposuction

Recovery from a chin liposuction is generally quite fast. The patient can resume normal activities after 2-3 days and begin more intense physical activities, generally, after approximately 1 to 2 weeks. However, these timings may vary from person to person. You will be given all the information for your specific case.

What is the price of a chin liposuction?

The price of double chin lipo varies depending on several important factors. Request a quote today.

Is a chin liposuction a permanent solution?

Yes, a double chin liposuction is considered a permanent solution to eliminate a double chin. However, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle after the procedure, with a balanced diet and regular exercise, to avoid gaining weight and volume again in the same area.

How long until surgical results appear?

The end results of a double chin liposuction may vary from person to person, but generally begin to be visible after a few weeks from the procedure. As the swelling decreases and healing occurs, the facial contour becomes more defined and the double chin gradually disappears.

Is it a painful surgery?

Double chin liposuction is performed using general or local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. After surgery, it is common to experience some discomfort, swelling and sensitivity in the treated area, but these symptoms can be controlled with medications prescribed by your doctor.

Other double chin treatments

In addition to double chin liposuction, there are other less invasive treatments to reduce or eliminate the double chin. Some of them include:

  • Coolsculpting: a non-invasive treatment that uses controlled cooling technology to freeze and destroy fat cells in the jowl area;
  • Forma Radiofrequency: a technique that uses radiofrequency waves to stimulate collagen production, resulting in firmer, more toned skin. It works particularly well when the double chin is mainly from excess sagging skin and not fat;
  • Morpheus 8: a procedure that combines microneedling with fractional radiofrequency to promote skin remodelling and rejuvenation.
