What is Botulinum Toxin (Botox)?
Botulinum toxin, known as Botox® (brand name), is a substance used in aesthetic medicine to smooth wrinkles and expression lines on the face (such as forehead wrinkles, glabellar lines (the area between the eyebrows), eye contour (crow’s feet), and around the lips), as well as to treat hyperhidrosis, chin dimpling, among others.
In the case of wrinkle smoothing, Botox is also used preventively, since botulinum toxin inhibits muscle contraction, preventing the formation of wrinkles in the treated area.
This procedure gives the face a smoother and more rejuvenated appearance, while maintaining a natural look without altering facial features.
What is Botox used for?
Botox is mainly used for:
-
Forehead wrinkles;
-
Drooping of the eyebrow tail;
-
Eye corners (“crow’s feet”);
-
Glabellar lines (area between the eyebrows);
-
Gummy smile (excessive display of the upper jaw gum);
-
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating);
-
“Orange peel” chin (chin dimpling).
How does it work?
Botox works by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. When injected into specific facial muscles, it prevents them from contracting, resulting in a smoother and more relaxed appearance, without dynamic lines or wrinkles (those that appear with movement).
Application Areas
For wrinkle smoothing, Botox is generally applied to the face (upper third, around the mouth, chin). In the case of hyperhidrosis, it can be applied to the armpits, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet.
There are other more specific applications. In case of doubt, request an evaluation.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most people can resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Botox is a minimally invasive treatment, so there is no need for a prolonged recovery period.
After botulinum toxin application, there may be some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, but this is usually temporary and can be relieved with cold compresses or medications recommended by the doctor.
During the first two days after treatment, follow these precautions:
-
Avoid lying down or bending your head too much in the first 4–6 hours;
-
Do not engage in intense exercise;
-
Do not press the treated areas.
We also recommend avoiding other aesthetic treatments in the area for at least 2 weeks.
Expected Results
The results of Botox treatment usually begin to appear around 5 days after application, with the full effect visible between 10 and 14 days.
During this period, you will notice a progressive improvement in the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines, reduction of chin dimpling (in the case of chin cellulite treatment), decreased sweating (in the case of hyperhidrosis treatment), or reduced gum exposure when smiling (in the case of gummy smile treatment).
Regarding the duration of the effect, for facial wrinkles Botox usually remains effective for 4 to 6 months, while in the case of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) the duration extends to 9 to 12 months.
From an aesthetic perspective, the treatment provides smoothing of expression/dynamic wrinkles. In addition, it helps prevent the formation of new wrinkles and improves the texture of the treated skin.
From a therapeutic perspective, Botox can offer a significant reduction in excessive sweating in the armpits, palms, and feet, as well as improvement of involuntary muscle contractions in certain cases.
It is important to note that results vary from person to person, depending on factors such as age, skin type, lifestyle, and treated area. Regular treatments tend to provide longer-lasting results over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Preventive effect of Botox: how does it work?
The preventive effect of Botox refers to its ability to prevent the development of new wrinkles and expression lines on the face. This benefit is achieved through the temporary paralysis of the facial muscles where Botox is injected.
Botox prevents nerves from sending signals to the muscles, significantly reducing muscle activity in the treated area. This is especially useful in facial areas where expressions can cause wrinkles over time, such as the space between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead.
With regular Botox applications, some patients notice that expression lines become less deep over time, even after the toxin’s effect has worn off. This happens because the muscles “learn” to relax and do not contract as strongly as before.
The current trend is to start Botox treatments earlier in adulthood, even before the formation of deep wrinkles, as a preventive measure. This approach is often referred to as “preventive Botox.”
How long does Botox application take?
A Botox session takes approximately 30 minutes.
When do you start seeing results?
You will have a real perception of the results after approximately 5 days.
How long do Botox results last?
The effect of the first Botox injection lasts approximately 4 to 6 months. Repeating the treatment progressively increases the duration of its effect. For hyperhidrosis, results last 9 months to 1 year.
What is “Lip Botox”?
The term “Lip Botox” can be a little confusing, since Botox (botulinum toxin) itself is not used to increase lip volume, which is what many people may think when they hear “Lip Botox.”
Instead, Botox can be applied around the lips to treat wrinkles and, in some cases, to slightly lift the upper lip, which can give the impression of fuller lips. This effect is known as the “Lip Flip.”
In the Lip Flip procedure with Botox, small amounts of the toxin are injected into the muscles around the mouth, causing these muscles to relax and making the upper lip curl slightly upward, creating the illusion of fuller lips.
However, this procedure does not add volume to the lip.
To actually increase lip volume, hyaluronic acid–based dermal fillers are used. These fillers are injected directly into the lips to add volume and definition. See Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, or more specifically, Lip Fillers.
What are the possible side effects of Botox?
The adverse effects of Botox (botulinum toxin) are generally very mild and temporary. However, in rare cases, some minor complications may occur.
Rare side effects:
-
Small bruises at the injection site;
-
Swelling at the injection site;
-
Mild temporary discomfort.
Very rare side effects:
-
Drooping eyelids (eyelid ptosis), which can occur if Botox spreads to areas near the injection site;
-
(Reversible) paralysis in specific parts of the face, if large amounts of Botox are applied;
-
Facial asymmetry, which can occur if Botox is not applied evenly.
All these adverse effects are temporary and reversible.
Side effects tend to be more frequent when applied by unqualified professionals. At Living Clinic, Botox is always administered by doctors dedicated to Aesthetic Medicine, which makes side effects practically nonexistent, except for the rare ones mentioned above, which may occur occasionally and temporarily (swelling and small bruises disappear after a few days).
Does Botox hurt?
Botox is considered a low-pain procedure. Even so, at Living Clinic we offer the application of anesthetic cream prior to treatment for greater patient comfort.
Botox is applied through injections with very fine needles, and many patients describe the sensation as a light sting or momentary discomfort.
After the application, there may be some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, but this is usually temporary and can be relieved with cold compresses or medications recommended by the doctor.
