What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, is a non-invasive procedure that uses the patient’s own blood to promote skin and tissue healing and rejuvenation.
In this facial treatment, a small blood sample is collected from the patient and centrifuged to separate the PRP from the rest of the blood. The PRP (with a high concentration of platelets) is then reinjected into the patient through microneedling or mesotherapy, releasing growth factors into the dermis. The final result is hydrated skin with improved radiance and elasticity.
What is PRP used for?
PRP offers several benefits for the skin and hair. Some of these benefits include:
1. Improve skin texture
PRP stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, key components that help smooth skin texture and make it more even and firm.
2. Increase facial skin radiance and glow
By promoting cellular regeneration and improving blood circulation in the treated area, PRP enhances overall skin health, resulting in a more revitalized complexion with a natural, healthy glow.
3. Improve the appearance of a tired-looking face
PRP treatment helps revitalize tired-looking faces, reducing signs of fatigue and stress.
4. Reduce fine wrinkles
PRP’s ability to stimulate collagen production helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, giving the skin a more rejuvenated look.
5. Reduce the visibility of scars
PRP is beneficial in reducing the visibility of scars, including acne scars, through tissue regeneration.
6. Reduce skin sagging
The boost in collagen and improved skin elasticity resulting from PRP treatment help combat sagging. This treatment is particularly effective in areas such as the face and neck, where sagging is most noticeable.
7. Promote hair growth
PRP has also been used in treatments for hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia. It can stimulate hair follicles to enter the growth phase, leading to improved hair density and health. Learn more in Hair PRP.
How does PRP work?
Platelet-Rich Plasma is characterized by a high concentration of growth factors, which can be up to five times greater than those found in untreated blood plasma. These factors are crucial for the generation of new cells and the synthesis of important proteins, such as collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.
In the medical field, PRP is increasingly used due to its ability to stimulate cellular regeneration and enhance tissue quality, which is why it is becoming more and more common in aesthetic medicine procedures.
Application Areas
Platelet-Rich Plasma is mainly used for skin treatments on the face, neck, and sometimes the hands. As mentioned earlier, PRP treatment can also be applied to the scalp to promote hair growth (Hair PRP).
Recovery and Aftercare
During the first 24 hours, you should avoid strenuous physical activities, intense sun exposure, sauna, swimming pools, and the beach. When combined with microneedling (dermapen), these precautions should be followed for 72 hours after the treatment.
Expected Results
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment delivers visible results for both skin and hair, thanks to its stimulation of cellular regeneration and the production of collagen and elastin.
Initial effects:
Results are typically noticeable after the 1st session on the face or after the 2nd session on the scalp, varying according to the treated area and each patient’s individual response.
Main benefits:
Brighter, more radiant, and more elastic skin;
Improved skin texture and reduction of fine wrinkles;
Reduced visibility of scars, including acne scars;
Diminished signs of fatigue and aging;
Stimulated hair growth, improving hair density and health.
Long-lasting results:
On average, the effects of the treatment last around 4 months and can be maintained and enhanced with a plan of regular sessions (a minimum of 4 sessions, one per month).
PRP provides gradual and natural improvement, respecting each patient’s individual characteristics, which ensures progressive and realistic results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is anesthesia applied?
The application of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is generally very comfortable and does not require anesthesia.
Does PRP treatment hurt?
Discomfort is minimal and well tolerated. The procedure may cause a slight pricking sensation due to microneedling or injection, but it is not considered painful.
How long does the treatment take?
A PRP session usually lasts around 30 minutes.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions depends on the area being treated and the individual characteristics of the patient’s skin or hair. On average, 4 sessions (1 per month) are recommended, but this may vary.
When will I start seeing results?
For facial treatments, noticeable improvements may be seen after the first session.
For PRP Hair treatments, the first results usually appear after the second session.
Full results typically become visible about 15 days after the treatment.
What are the contraindications of PRP?
PRP is not suitable for patients with blood disorders related to a low platelet count.
It is also not recommended for those taking anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, or anticoagulants, as these may interfere with the tissue regeneration process.
Other contraindications may exist, so it is important to discuss your medical history with the Living Clinic doctor.
Are PRP results permanent?
No. Results typically last around 4 months, and a maintenance plan is recommended to prolong and enhance the effects.
Can PRP be combined with other aesthetic treatments?
Yes. PRP is often combined with techniques such as microneedling, mesotherapy, or laser treatments, boosting results and accelerating skin regeneration.
