What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of massage that primarily helps in the treatment of cellulite and fluid retention, although it is beneficial in multiple situations (see next section).

What is it for?

It is a gentle manual massage technique aimed at increasing the flow of lymphatic circulation, promoting the elimination of excess fluids and toxins. It is used to treat aesthetic concerns as well as interstitial edema and other conditions. It has a diuretic and relaxing effect, helps eliminate cellulite nodules, reduces body volume, and alleviates symptoms of heavy and tired legs.

When applied regularly before and after plastic surgery procedures, the massage helps reduce swelling and bruising more effectively.

In general, manual lymphatic drainage is recommended for:

✔️ Cellulite;
✔️ Fluid retention;
✔️ Poor circulation;
✔️ Post-operative recovery.

How does it work?

As mentioned earlier, lymphatic drainage is a therapeutic technique that stimulates the lymphatic system, assisting in the elimination of toxins and the proper transport of body fluids. This gentle, rhythmic massage promotes lymphatic circulation and helps reduce swelling caused by fluid retention.

Areas of Application

Manual lymphatic drainage can be performed on various areas of the body, depending on the needs and goals of the treatment. The most common areas include:

  • Face and neck: To reduce swelling, improve skin appearance, and relieve tension;

  • Arms: Often used to treat swelling, especially after surgical procedures or in cases of lymphedema;

  • Legs: Helps relieve swelling, improve circulation, and can be useful for varicose veins and lymphedema;

  • Abdomen: Helps reduce bloating and stimulates circulation in the abdominal area.

Expected Results

Normally, the results of lymphatic drainage can be seen right after the first session.

After the number of sessions recommended for your particular case, a visible reduction in swelling and/or cellulite is expected.

Perguntas Frequentes

Each manual lymphatic drainage session lasts approximately 45–60 minutes.

Normally, we recommend a minimum of 6 manual lymphatic drainage sessions, but it depends on the case.

Yes, it is possible. During pregnancy, hormone levels such as estrogen and progesterone increase. This can lead to greater sodium and water retention. Additionally, the pregnant body needs to increase blood volume to supply oxygen and nutrients to the growing fetus, and the expanding uterus can compress the veins that return blood to the heart, causing swelling in the legs and feet.

Manual lymphatic drainage during pregnancy can be very beneficial, helping to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote relaxation.
