What is Lipoabdominoplasty?

Lipoabdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that combines liposuction with abdominoplasty.

This technique allows not only the removal of excess fat from the abdomen and flanks but also the elimination of excess skin and the correction of separated abdominal muscles.

lipoabdominoplastia

How is it performed?

During the surgery, the surgeon first performs liposuction to remove the excess fat. Then, the excess skin is removed, and the abdominal wall is reinforced, resulting in a flatter and firmer abdomen.

Liposuction of the back is also often performed to achieve a more defined silhouette.

Who is this surgery for?

This procedure is suitable for men and women who have fat accumulation and skin laxity in the abdominal area, often resulting from pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations.

It is ideal for patients who, despite diet and exercise, are unable to eliminate the excess fat and skin in the abdominal area.

It is important that candidates are in good overall health and maintain realistic expectations about the results.

Expected Results

After lipoabdominoplasty, the abdomen is expected to appear smoother, firmer, and more contoured. Patients generally experience a significant improvement in their body shape, which tends to boost self-esteem and confidence.

The removal of excess skin and fat contributes to a more sculpted appearance, and the correction of weakened or bulging abdominal muscles can improve both firmness and functionality.

By strengthening the abdominal wall, the surgery may also help improve posture, especially in cases where weak abdominal muscles contribute to back pain.

Although it is not a procedure specifically intended for stretch mark removal, lipoabdominoplasty can also eliminate some stretch marks located in the lower abdomen.

The results are long-lasting, especially when maintained with a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Some degree of tissue laxity may occur with aging, but never to the extent present before surgery.

Lipoabdominoplasty Post-Surgery and Recovery

Recovery from abdominoplasty may take several weeks (on average, about 4 weeks), during which patients should follow medical instructions to optimize results and minimize complications.

In the first few days, you may not be able to stand upright for long periods, which can cause some discomfort. You may also feel tightness in the abdominal skin. Some swelling and bruising are normal but typically subside within a few days or weeks.

During the first 6 to 8 weeks, you will need to wear a compression garment both day and night.

The level of pain associated with abdominoplasty varies from patient to patient. Some report moderate discomfort, while others experience back pain due to sleeping position. However, any discomfort can usually be managed with pain medication.

In the postoperative period, it is also essential to undergo lymphatic drainage treatments.

Lymphatic drainage after surgery is often recommended following surgical procedures, including lipoabdominoplasty, as it helps reduce swelling, prevent fibrosis, and improve blood circulation.

Lymphatic drainage can also help relieve postoperative pain and discomfort, promote muscle relaxation, and reduce tension in the treated area.

Most patients return to normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

What is the scar like after Lipoabdominoplasty?

The scar resulting from lipoabdominoplasty is similar to that of a traditional abdominoplasty, positioned horizontally in the lower abdomen (suprapubic fold), usually below the bikini line, making it discreet and easily concealed by underwear or swimwear. The length of the scar depends on the amount of fat and skin to be removed, but the surgeon at Living Clinic (Dr. Francisco Martins de Carvalho) will aim to make it as small and discreet as possible.

Although the surgeon strives to make the scars as inconspicuous as possible, healing always depends on the patient’s genetics and their ability to follow postoperative care instructions.

There are also treatments that can significantly improve the final appearance of the scar, such as Fractional CO2 Laser.

Other treatments like drainage, massage, compression, silicone, and creams can also be excellent complements for optimal healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

During the surgery, you will not feel any pain due to general anesthesia. Postoperatively, some discomfort or moderate pain may occur, which can be managed with pain medication prescribed by the surgeon.

Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

As with any surgical procedure, lipoabdominoplasty involves risks. It is important for the patient to be aware of these risks before deciding to proceed.
Some risks associated with surgery include:

  • Infection at the incision site;
  • Hematoma;
  • Poor healing of incisions;
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia;
  • Deep vein thrombosis (formation of blood clots in deep veins) and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot that travels to the lungs).

The main contraindications for lipoabdominoplasty include:

  • Uncontrolled chronic diseases (uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, severe heart or lung disease, etc.);

  • Blood clotting disorders (hemophilia or thrombophilia, use of anticoagulants);

  • Obesity;

  • Active smokers (unless they commit to stopping smoking at least 4 to 6 weeks before and after surgery);

  • Current pregnancy (the procedure is naturally contraindicated during gestation);

  • Planned pregnancy (lipoabdominoplasty may affect surgical results);

  • Active infections (e.g., skin or systemic infections);

  • Diseases that affect healing (such as autoimmune conditions or prolonged corticosteroid treatments);

  • Untreated psychological or psychiatric conditions;

  • Recent abdominal surgeries (these may interfere with blood supply and healing; it is recommended to wait an appropriate period before considering lipoabdominoplasty);

  • Allergies or reactions to general anesthesia.

The information provided is for informational purposes only and does not replace a medical consultation with a plastic surgeon. Only a qualified doctor can determine whether lipoabdominoplasty is suitable for your specific case.

Initial results are visible immediately after surgery, but the final outcome may take 3 to 6 months to fully appear, once swelling has completely subsided and scars have matured.

The results are long-lasting, especially if you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle. Significant weight changes or future pregnancy may affect the achieved results.
