What is Lobuloplasty?
Lobuloplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair and restore the shape of the earlobe. This type of surgery is mainly indicated to correct torn earlobes caused by prolonged use of heavy earrings or gauges, or earlobes that have lost their shape due to aging or trauma.
How is it performed?
The surgery is relatively simple and quick. The plastic surgeon makes small incisions in the earlobe to remove scar tissue and then sutures the area to restore a more natural shape, aiming to hide or camouflage the scars so they are less noticeable.
Lobuloplasty is performed under local anesthesia, meaning the patient remains awake during the procedure but feels no pain. The treatment is done on an outpatient basis, with no need for hospitalization.
Who is this surgery for?
Lobuloplasty is recommended for individuals with the following conditions:
Torn earlobe due to trauma or prolonged use of earrings or gauges;
Deformed earlobe;
Sagging or aging of the earlobe.
Expected Results
The results of lobuloplasty are highly satisfactory and visible immediately, with the aesthetic correction of the earlobe noticeable right after the procedure, although a short recovery period is required.
The earlobe gains a more symmetrical and natural shape, allowing the patient to regain confidence and, eventually, wear earrings or accessories again.
The final result can be seen after complete healing, which occurs in about six weeks, and most patients are extremely pleased with the restored appearance of the earlobe.
Lobuloplasty Post-Surgery and Recovery
Recovery from lobuloplasty is quick and involves minimal discomfort. During the postoperative period, it is recommended to avoid touching the ears or exposing the area to trauma or chemical products in the first few weeks. The patient should:
Keep the area clean and dry;
Apply healing ointments as prescribed by the doctor;
Avoid wearing earrings for at least six weeks;
Visit the doctor for suture removal, usually after 7 to 8 days.
Postoperative care is essential to ensure proper healing and minimize the appearance of scars.
What is the scar like after Lobuloplasty?
The scar resulting from lobuloplasty is usually small and discreet. It is located on the earlobe or at the junction between the lobe and the face and becomes almost imperceptible over time, especially with proper postoperative care. The surgeon uses fine suturing techniques to ensure the scar is minimal and aesthetically pleasing. After a few months, it is even possible to have new ear piercings if the patient wishes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is lobuloplasty painful?
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. After the surgery, it is normal to experience mild discomfort or swelling, but the pain is minimal and can be managed with simple painkillers as prescribed by the doctor.
Can I pierce my ears again after lobuloplasty?
Yes, it is possible to have new ear piercings once healing is complete, which usually occurs between 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure. The plastic surgeon will advise the ideal time to safely redo the piercings.
When can I return to work and normal activities?
Most patients can resume normal activities, including work, the day after surgery, as long as these do not involve excessive physical effort or risk of trauma to the ears. Intense physical exercise should be avoided for at least one week.
What are the risks of lobuloplasty?
Lobuloplasty is a low-risk procedure, but as with any surgery, there is a small chance of complications such as infection, delayed healing, or visible scarring. Following the surgeon’s post-operative instructions helps minimize these risks.
How long does it take to see the final result of lobuloplasty?
Results are noticeable immediately after surgery, but the final outcome – with the scar fully formed and the earlobe stabilized – is achieved after about 6 weeks.
